Radiology

Radiology is the medical specialty which uses different types of imaging of the internal body (bones or tissue) to assist with diagnosis of damage or disease.

Waikato DHB's Radiology service is led from Waikato Hospital and oversees radiology in Thames Hospital and the three rural hospitals at Tokoroa, Te Kuiti and Taumarunui, as well as some services to the wider Midland health region.

Equipment

Main Department – Meade Clinical Centre

  • 6 x Philips Digital Diagnost Rooms located in MCC which cover IP’s, OP’s, GP referrals. Rooms have wireless detectors and are stitching compatible.

ED – 24/7 Acute Services

  • 2 x dedicated ED rooms currently with Philips Digital Diagnost Units (to be replaced early 2019)
  • 4 bedded Resus suite with a dedicated ceiling mounted CR Unit (to be replaced early 2019 with a 2 x 2 DR unit).
  • Dedicated OPG Room

Fluoroscopy

  • Philips Easy Diagnost (which went into service July 2017). Dedicated Timms imaging system for SLT studies.

Endoscopy

  • Philips Multi Diagnost Eleva (Flat Detector / C-Arm)

Theatre

  • 6 x Philips Image Intensifiers, with a mix of Pulera’s and Veradius’s (flat plate)

Mobiles

  • 4 x Philips DR Diagnost 2 x GE AMX4’s

The conventional imaging department provides a diagnostic service to all specialties across the hospital and the wider region.

Our outpatient referrals include all types of orthopaedic work including specialised spinal imaging which is carried through into the complex procedures that are done in theatre.

The conventional imaging department in MCC operates Monday to Friday 0800-1630.

ED is staffed 24/7 and provides imaging for whatever comes through the door, as well as covering Inpatient’s when MCC is unstaffed and servicing all acute theatre needs.

Staffing

  • Shared with other areas: from the above, 16 staff (full & part-time) work 50/50 between modalities to include CT, Interventional, Mammography & Cardiology.

  • Weekends - approximately 20 examinations per day (Saturday/Sunday 0830-1700)
  • After hours – on call, as per CT after hours guidelines

  • Brain, Chest/Abdomen, Abdomen, Angiograms, Cardiac, Colonography, MSK, CTU’s, Biopsies, Sinuses, Temporal bones and Traumas
  • Adults and paediatrics

  • 10 x Part time (Various hours – from 0.9 FTE to 0.4 FTE)
  • 3 x 50/50 – shared roles with Conventional Imaging department

Examinations

Wide range of examination types, the most common procedures include: Bone, Thyroid, Neuroendocrine/Tumour imaging, Renal studies, Brain, and Breast and Melanoma Sentinel node localisation examinations

Patients

Capacity to scan approximately 100 patients per day.

Examinations

  • All general work, (i.e. abdominal, pelvic and small parts)
  • Some vascular and limited MSK
  • High risk obstetric scans.

Staffing

  • Sonographers: 8 FTE: 3 Full Time, 8 part time, including 1 50/50 split with Private Practise.
  • Trainees: 3 FTE: 1 x Full Time, 2 x 50/50 shared with a private practise

Other

The Ultrasound service at Waikato Hospital consists of 7 high-end machines and provides a variety of general ultrasound imaging to the inpatient, outpatient and primary referred patients. The service also supports the Hospital's Obstetric Department. We service a large catchment area and are exposed to lots of different pathologies and interesting cases.

  • One Philips Allura FD20 with 3D Angio /XperCT capabilities – with an integrated CX-50 Ultrasound machine in Interventional Radiology Room 3.
  • One CX-50 and One Epiq7 ultrasound machine in Interventional Radiology Room 2.
  • One Philips Allura FD20 with a Maquet surgical/angio table in the Hybrid Theatre, where the EVARs and trauma cases are performed.
  • One Philips Allura FD20/10 Bi-Plane situated in Cardiology – used by IR one day a week for Neuro work, and whenever required for acute cases.

Nurses

  • We have 10 IR Nurses and an ACNM rostered to Interventional and Radiology services

Equipment

  • Philips Intellispace PACS Enterprise
  • Philips Intellispace PACS Radiology (Radiology reporting only) Voice recognition and digital dictations options.
  • Intellispace Portal . Used for Advanced visualisation and post processing in Radiology and some specialty areas.
  • Philips Anywhere PACS Viewer integrated with CWS or as a stand alone web viewer  (from July 2018). This will be extended to external users following its introduction internally.
  • Karisma Radiology Information System. This system provides all the examination details for every patient referred for  Radiology at the DHB. Patient demographics are supplied by adt feed from iPM. Results are messaged directly from  Karisma to CWS, PACS and via Healthlink to external referrers.
  • All Radiology imaging studies from Waikato, BOP and Tairawhiti DHBs are available in PACS.
  • Some non-radiology ultrasound studies and videos also archive using the RIS/PACS solution.
  • Imported studies from other DHBs and Private practices will be available in PACS on a temporary basis if they have been requested. We have electronic links to all NZ DHB’s and most of the private PACS providers,
  • Imaging from overseas can only be imported from disc. There are no electronic links to overseas PACS systems.

Examinations

  • All Radiology examinations are managed by the RIS/PACS solution.
  • Cardiac angiograms are also available in PACS.
  • Echocardiograms (adult) are not in PACS. They are in the cardiology ICVS.

  • Waikato 2 fulltime PACS/RIS administrators
  • BOP  1 fulltime and 1 part time PACS/RIS administrator
  • Tairawhiti  1 fulltime PACS/RIS administrator

Other
After hours support for RIS/PACS is provided by the regional PACS/RIS administrators.

MRI imaging is provided by a private company Midland MRI Ltd
