Greetings, to all of us who are energetically involved in the promotion of Māori health;
with special reference to those who have passed away;
and so, let the dead be joined to themselves and those of us who are still a living entity,
let us share the burden of promoting healthy lifestyles.

Legislation and professional standards of practice require health professionals to provide culturally competent and culturally safe care for those accessing health services. This includes the application of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi into practice when caring for Māori health consumers and whānau.

Our Professional Development Unit's Cultural Support Team provides guidance and resources to assist health professionals to demonstrate cultural competence and cultural safety to meet the needs of our population.

Principles of Cultural support for Māori and Pacific Island descent graduate nurses and midwives

  • Whakapapa – what connects us to being Māori and/or Pacific Island descent
  • Whanaungatanga – establish connections and relationships with other Māori and Pacific nurses
  • Manaakitanga – welcome to NETP/NESP programme, pastoral care
  • Āwhinatanga – provide support and mentorship for graduates
  • Whakaruruhau – provide a safe place for you to be you, without judgment 
  • Kotahitanga – work together to grow a strong resilient new graduate Māori and Pacific nursing workforce

Cultural support for Māori nurses and midwives offers a range of opportunities to come together, strengthen their cultural identity as indigenous people, explore practice from a Māori worldview, integrate tikanga and Māori models into practice and gain confidence as Māori health practitioners.

Pacific nurses and midwives

Legislation and professional standards of practice require nurses and midwives to provide culturally competent and culturally safe care for those accessing health services. This includes the application of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi into practice when caring for Māori health consumers and whānau.

The Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act, 2003, requires all health professionals to demonstrate cultural competence.

Caring for people and working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

Healthcare professionals work with people and care for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Face-to-face CALD courses will be held at the Bryant Education Centre on Waiora Waikato Hospital Campus. They provide those attending with insight and understanding of cultural dimensions, how different cultures respond to health related situations, different health concepts, faith based practices, and differences in expectations from health systems.
